Two charged with killing missing miner

Just two days after severed body parts suspected to belong to Mahdia miner Shawn Clarke were discovered, two men were charged in a city court with his murder.

Shane McAlmont, 33, and Marlon Joseph, 28, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday and were not required to plead to the indictable offences of murder and being an accessory after the fact.

It was alleged that McAlmont, between July 10th and July 22nd, 2016, at Salbora Road, Mahdia, Potaro, murdered Clarke. It was also alleged that Joseph, during that same period, did receive, comfort, relieve and maintain, harbour and assist Mc Almont, knowing he had murdered Clarke.

They have both been remanded to prison until October 17 and the matter has been transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for a preliminary inquiry into the charge.

Clarke, 47, of Lot ‘C’ Norton Street, Lodge, reportedly went missing on July 10th.

Rachelle Clarke, had stated that her husband related to her that he would be uplifting a package at Mahdia later on that day before traveling to another area for work. She said that her last contact with him was later that night when he indicated he was still working but would proceed on foot to collect the package, also anticipating that he would return home late.

However, it was later brought to her attention that the package was never retrieved and subsequent attempts to contact the man proved futile.

Investigations last week led to the detainment of a man named “Marlon,” with whom Clarke passed through a backdam at Mini Hall, according to eyewitnesses.

During the course of last week, the severed body parts as well as items later confirmed to have been the property of the deceased were discovered by the police.
