Unity man fatally stabbed after market argument

A man was stabbed to death early yesterday morning near the Bourda Market.

According to a police press release, an investigation is being conducted into the murder of Omesh Chetram, 34, of Unity, East Coast Demerara.

According to the reports, sometime between 11:30 PM on Saturday and 1:30 AM yesterday on Alexander Street, Chetram was involved in an argument with a man. He was subsequently stabbed to his abdomen with a knife by the man who later escaped. Chetram was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Some of the vendors around the market related to Stabroek News that the man who they know as ‘Zindagee’ was homeless and would often be around the market doing odd jobs for the vendors.

“I don’t know what exactly happen but I know it start at the intersection. They de arguing all the time and it reach till down by the stand,” one of the vendors said, pointing out that the man who allegedly stabbed Chetram was one of the stall owners’ son.

He said that he did not know what the argument was about but while the man is still on the run, his parents have been taken into police custody.
