Nismes man accused of assault on ex was only defending himself, lawyer says

A Nismes man, who is accused of abusing the mother of his child, was yesterday granted bail after his lawyer claimed that he was only trying to defend himself.

Quincy Jones, 27, of 184 Nismes, West Bank Demerara, yesterday pleaded not guilty to two charges which stated that on October 3, at Essequibo, he unlawfully assaulted Myrana Rampersaud and caused her grievous bodily harm; and that on October 1, he unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Rampersaud. Jones, who was represented by attorney George Thomas, pleaded not guilty to the two charges, which were read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.

According to Thomas, it was Rampersaud who instigated the altercations by assaulting his client and she too is to be charged. He said that his client tried to defend himself but as a result he was charged. Thomas further told the court that if his client is granted bail, he would stay away from the virtual complainant and will cooperate with the police.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, who had no objections to bail, told the court that the parties, who share a child together, do not live together.

The Chief Magistrate granted Jones his release on $30,000 bail. The case was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, where it is to be called on October 17.
