Mahaica man charged over Rohee robbery

- released on $300,000 bail

A man was yesterday charged with robbing the home of People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Clement Rohee of over $3.5 million in jewellery and cash.

Delon Wills, 28, appeared before Chief Magistrate in Georgetown, where he denied two separate robbery charges that were read against him and was granted his release on $300,000 bail.

It is alleged that on November 9, at Ixora Avenue, Eccles, Wills, of Lot 94 Belmont Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, used a gun to rob Anjanie and Anika Lane of a US$6,000 Rolex wristwatch, and two Movado wristwatches, valued US$4,000 and US$3,000, which were the property of Rohee.

He is also alleged to have stolen $1,500,000 a gold chain, a $60,000 gold chain with a pendant, a pair of $60,000 gold earrings, $60,000 gold brooches, US$100 and TT$200, which were the property of Chamalee Rohee.

Wills pleaded not guilty to both allegations made against him.

Attorney Sandil Kisson, who appeared on behalf of Wills, made a bail application while saying that his client was not a flight risk. He noted that Wills currently has a causing death by dangerous driving charge at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court. He added that his client presented himself to the Brickdam Police Station subsequent to a visit made to his home by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) ranks.

Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to Wills being released on bail due to the prevalence of the offence, the fact that a weapon was used and the penalty the crime attracts.

He added that the police are in possession of CCTV footage taken on the day of the robbery and a fingerprint was also uplifted.

It was noted, however, that there was nothing in the police file stating that the defendant was on the CCTV footage or that the fingerprint belonged to him.

Wills was subsequently granted $150,000 bail on each charge and was ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Mahaica Police Station every Friday.

The matter was then adjourned to January 11, when it will be heard at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

Meanwhile, Colette Parks, the woman who allegedly rented the getaway vehicle used by the men who robbed the home of Rohee, was charged on November 18 with two counts of robbery for the crime. She was remanded to prison.
