A Plaisance businessman was yesterday afternoon shot and robbed of $4 million, less than one hour after he and a friend had visited a city bank and were about to enter his Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara house.
Stabroek News understands that during the incident, which occurred around 15:20 hrs, Kenneth Earle, 39, a businessman who operates a minibus service was shot twice in his leg. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where an x-ray was done and was subsequently transferred to another hospital. His condition is listed as stable.
His friend, Sekou Musa, 32, a manager attached to Qualfon and of Triumph, ECD, who had some of the cash in his possession, managed to scale the back fence of the premises and escape the bandits.
A small quantity of the money, which Earle had withdrawn to pay his bus workers, was recovered in a drain where it had dropped when Musa scaled the fence.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the victims went to Scotia Bank on Robb Street, Georgetown to withdraw the cash after which they left for Earle’s Plaisance residence in motor vehicle PVV 2520 driven by Earle.
On their way there, they stopped at a hardware store in Plaisance, where Earle gave Musa half of the cash to keep. They then drove to the businessman’s home and were about to exit the vehicle, when two armed bandits appeared and discharged several rounds at them.
Two of the bullets struck Earle to his legs and he was relieved of the cash he had in his possession.
However, while this was transpiring Sekou managed to jump over the fence.
During this process, a quantity of the cash he had in his possession fell into a drain and was later recovered by Earle’s son.
The bandits made good their escape in a white Toyota Premio with tinted windows. The police were summoned and five .32 spent shells along with one fragment were recovered.
Up to late last evening, no arrests had been made.
