An Alberttown resident was yesterday remanded to prison after he denied robbing a police officer of a gold band.
Ceon Maynard appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge.
The charge stated that on December 24, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, Maynard robbed Robert Tyndall of a gold band valued at $150,000.
According to Maynard, on the day in question, he was shopping with his girlfriend in Stabroek Market when the police came up to him and accused him of stealing a gold band.
The accused said he told the police that he was simply doing some holiday shopping, and the bags in his hands were evidence of this. Maynard tried to convince the chief magistrate that he was innocent of the crime.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that the gold band was found in the possession of the accused. He later told the court that he would be objecting to Maynard being granted bail. Jones also told the court that the defendant gave the police different addresses.
Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently remanded Maynard to jail. His matter was adjourned until January 12, 2017 for statements.
