Please refer to the letter which appeared in your issue of January 3 captioned ‘Why was the Pergola omitted from the clean-up?’ Mr Alex Edwards is right about the present state of that particular piece of national art.
However, he is very wrong to have assumed that the Mayor and City Council is not paying attention to it. In fact, the council is in the process of consulting the relevant stakeholders to refurbish that edifice. We need not pen a line on the rich historical, cultural and social values of this “Pergola Promenade” to our city and country as a whole. We cannot and will not allow it to be cast aside in our intense thrust towards revitalizing our city in this particular moment of our nation’s history. Its restoration is part of the process and substance of our mission and mandate at the Georgetown municipality.
Also, in another few days, the council will begin to upgrade and tidy that stretch of land on which it is situate between Albert and Light Streets, and to create a green healthy space in keeping with our mission of a green and clean city.
Nevertheless, we sincerely thank Mr Edwards for his interest and contribution to this area of our work and ask him and others to continue to assist us by making such keen and necessary observations on all aspects of city life.
