Local government elections is the time for the youth to take up leadership positions

Dear Editor,

I believe that local government elections are an opportune time for the youth of this nation to stand up as a single unit and take up leadership positions in their communities. The most important thing Guyanese can do for our country is foster an environment that nurtures the inclusion of young men and women in important decision-making positions which relate to building this nation.

The grooming process for young leaders must begin early, and new personalities and fresh faces must be allowed to express their leadership potential and implement their innovative ideas. Youth have many ideas for moving our nation forward and I believe that at this juncture of our nation’s history they are necessary in nation building.

I am 24 and I just graduated with my degree in medicine with distinction. I grew up in the heart of Georgetown, in a single-parent home and as a young man I felt there was always an unfilled need for a role model that I could fashion myself after; someone who spoke bravely and proudly through their actions and conduct to what was honourable.

Local government elections gives young men and women who are accessible, a chance to fill this role and become examples for their peers. I am in full support of all youth groups and young individuals who are taking the chance to stand up and lead by contesting the local elections and I encourage more to be daring, to be fearless and to lead.

In closing I would like to state that I will be contesting the local government elections this coming March 18, as an individual candidate in Constituency Number 7 of the municipality of Georgetown.

Yours faithfully,
Stefan Hutson
