Many consumers deny meter tampering allegations

Dear Editor,

I was heartened to see the many condemnations of GPL’s disconnection notice in SN of December 30 last year, informing the public of a reconnection fee of $3,200 and the payment of an increased security deposit 6 times the average monthly bill.

While this is outrageous I have been consistently appealing for action to be taken to stop far worse cases where consumers are charged on the basis of unfounded allegations of meter tampering, locked up, placed before the courts, fined and what is owed backdated for 2 years. This often costs thousands of dollars. Many consumers deny tampering and accuse GPL of manufacturing the cases. The contractors gain by the number of disconnections.

Why is there not this same revulsion pertaining to this unfair behaviour? Why not a swift reaction on this issue as was done on the above lesser evil? Others need to express their disgust here too.

My experience with GPL is horrific as I endured paying twice as much consumed being the recipient of one of the fast spinning meters.

Yours faithfully,
M Sookraj
