The left is gaining traction in the US election campaign

Dear Editor,

There is an interesting development in the US presidential race. Bernie Sanders continues to do well in the primaries with his most recent win in West Virginia even though the odds of him getting the Democratic nomination are almost impossible.

It is clear that his “socialist” appeal is connecting with a growing number of young voters who appeared passionate about the idea of a more equitable distribution of wealth and greater emphasis on social welfare, in particular college education and medical care. Even though he may not get the nomination, his strong and passionate advocacy for higher taxes on the rich and curbing the excesses of Wall Street has resonated well among voters, in particular younger voters.

It seems clear that the appeal of the left is gaining traction among a much broader constituency, which is certainly a plus for the Hilary campaign in the upcoming presidential elections.

Donald Trump the likely Republican candidate is now changing his stance on the issue of taxation and has indicated that he “may” increase taxes on the rich, no doubt as a consequence of the Sanders popular appeal on the issue of taxation policy.

Yours faithfully,

Hydar Ally
