Cabinet meetings must not be held at Camp Ayanganna

Dear Editor,

The Indian Action Committee (IAC) is shocked and extremely disappointed that the Government of Guyana has seen it fit to hold its Cabinet meetings at the headquarters of the Guyana Defence Force at Camp Ayanganna while renovations are being made at the Ministry of the Presidency (MOTP), according to a media report.

The IAC feels that this is not only a bad decision by the Government of Guyana, but it is inexcusable and unacceptable given the historical fact that the headquarters of the Guyana Defence Force at Camp Ayanganna, is the same place where rigging and manipulation of general elections took place during the years of the PNC dictatorship in which hundreds of thousands of Guyanese were disenfranchised.

The IAC understands that a large section of the population of Guyana is very concerned with the apparent militarization of the government and its agencies, and a move like this will only serve to cause more anxiety amongst those that did not vote for the coalition government.

The IAC urges the Government of Guyana to immediately abandon this thought of utilizing the headquarters of the Guyana Defence Force at Camp Ayanganna for Cabinet meetings, and quickly identify an alternative location, in the context of social stability that is acceptable to all of the people of Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Saira Alli

Secretary,
