Umpires were forced to abandon the third day without a ball being bowled after persistent rain prevented the players from taking to the field.

The decision was made just following the scheduled tea time interval after the first two successive sessions were rained out.

Rain had also affected play during the first two days, particularly the second day when only 68 balls were bowled.

Showers are also forecast for the fourth day on Wednesday but officials are hoping the rain would not be significant enough to affect the chances of play.

If play is possible, West Indies will resume on 248 for seven in their first innings after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Australia have already secured the series by winning the first two Test matches convincingly.

A draw now appears likely with just two days remaining in the third and final Test.
