Smith misses three figures as Volcanoes win in rain against Jaguars

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, CMC – Veteran opener Devon Smith missed out on a hundred as Windward Islands Volcanoes edged Guyana Jaguars by one run courtesy of the Duckworth/Lewis method in their opening Group B, Regional Super50 game here yesterday.

The left-handed Smith struck 91 with four fours and two sixes while Sunil Ambris chimed in with 47 and Liam Sebastien, 27.

Volcanoes were tottering on 39 for three in the tenth over before Smith and Ambris came together to add 84 for the fourth wicket and steady the innings.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (3-32) and off-spinner Steven Jacobs (3-40) finished with three wickets apiece.

Chasing a revised target of 175 from 33 overs after rain intervened, Jaguars found themselves short of their par score at 122 for four after 26 overs, when rains arrived ended play prematurely at the St Paul’s Sports Complex.

Opener Assad Fudadin was unbeaten on 44 and was leading a rally with fellow left-hander Raymon Reifer who was unbeaten on 18.

Fudadin put on 42 for the first wicket with Vishaul Singh who made 21 before adding a hasty 50 for the third wicket with captain Leon Johnson who made 25.
