Hornets, Wolves record wins as GRFU 15s league commences

The 2016 campaigns of the Pepsi Hornets and the UG Wolves got off to positive starts this past weekend at the National Park.

The two teams recorded handsome victories when the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) kicked off the season with the GTT15s league.

In the season opener on Saturday, the Hornets’ ruggers clad in their spanking new blue, red and white outfits, came from behind to sting their arch rivals, Yamaha Caribs 38-20 in a seesaw matchup.

After leading 12-5 at half time, the Caribs shot themselves in the foot by scoring only eight more while allowing 33 points in the second half.

Four conversions by Leon Greaves along with tries by Blaise Bailey, Peabo Hamilton, Rickford Cummings and Rawle Cole sealed the win for the Hornets.

Player/coach, Theodore Henry, Walter George and Jose Felicien were on the names on the score sheet for the Caribs on Saturday.

On Sunday, the rampant student athletes of Guyana’s highest learning institution thoroughly schooled the up and coming Police Falcons unit with a 64-5 drubbing.

Lance Adonis was a thorn in the side of the Falcons as he toyed with their defense and helped himself to three tries and six conversions.

While UG’s star winger, Ryan Dey was held scoreless, Godfrey Broomes, Captain Rondell McArthur, Malcolm Rodrigues and Osei McKenzie chipped in to pick up the scoring slack. Broomes, the orchestrator of much of the offense in the overcast conditions, scored four tries and also recorded a conversion to punctuate his monster game. McArthur Rodrigues and McKenzie each scored a try apiece.
