Leal, TEG dominate Burnham ‘Memorial’ three stage race

Team Evolution Gillette (TGE) is turning the local cycling circuit into a one-team show.

The club’s dominance continued on Republic Day when one of their standout riders, Raul Leal took the spoils of the Forbes Burnham Memorial three-stage road race.

It was Leal’s second win in a row and the fifth in succession for the club in the seven races this season.

After two days and three stages, Leal took the spoils of the event, leading his club mates, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and Orville Hinds on the podium to underline their dominance.

Leal clocked five hours, 54 minutes and five seconds for the top podium spot.

He won the first stage in Berbice, placed fourth in the second stage (Linden to Home-stretch Avenue) and pedaled in second the final stage from the National Cultural Centre to Belfield and back.

Paul DeNobrega (Team Alanis), Shaquel Agard (Linden Bauxite Flyers) and Junior Niles of Team Coco’s filled out the top six paid positions for the event which was sponsored by The Burnham Foundation.

According to Guyana Cycling News, Christine Matheson of Trojan Cycle Club (Berbice) pedaled away with the female category while Whitney Poyer placed second.

The event, sponsored by Burnham Foundation was held in observance of the former Presi-dent, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham’s 93rd birthday which was on Saturday last.

The race was held over one stage previously, Georgetown to Belfield and back but now will be a three-stage contest with the organisers planning to expand and include overseas riders.
