Chasing 236 at Buffalo Park, the Caribbean side twice looked poised to pull off victory but lost wickets in clusters to end on 200 for eight off their 50 overs.

Former captain Merissa Aguilleira and opener Shaquana Quintyne both struck 40 while wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle stroked 27 and Deandra Dottin, 25.

West Indies Women lost teenaged opener Hayley Matthews for two in the third over of the innings with the score on nine but were bolstered by a second wicket stand of 57 between Quintyne and Kyshona Knight (18).

Quintyne faced 68 balls and counted six fours while Knight’s innings consumed 45 deliveries and included two fours.

When Quintyne was bowled by leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk in the 19th over at 66 for two, it triggered a slide where another three wickets fell for 42 runs to leave West Indies Women on 118 for five in the 33rd over.

Yet again, they benefitted from another tidy partnership, this time between Aguilleira and Campbelle who added 52 for the sixth wicket.

The right-handed Aguilleira struck three fours off 65 balls while Campbelle’s innings was a breezy one, requiring just 32 balls and including three fours.

Windies Women looked to be taking the advantage when both batsmen fell in the space of seven deliveries and when Anisa Mohammed went for one, three wickets had tumbled for seven runs.

Stumbling at 177 for eight in the 46th over, West Indies Women had no momentum and their innings crawled to a tame end.

Earlier, opener Trisha Chetty and van Niekerk both struck 55 while Mignon du Preez got 43 and Marizanne Kapp, 39, as South Africa Women eased to 235 for six after opting to bat first.

The hosts benefitted from handy partnerships throughout their innings, thanks to Chetty. She and Andrie Steyn (21) put on 39 for the first wicket before she combined with du Preez to add a further 72 for the second wicket. Chetty faced 83 balls counted four fours while du Preez struck seven fours in a 62-ball innings.

When du Preez departed in the 25th over, Chetty anchored a third wicket stand of 41 with Kapp, to give the Proteas Women renewed momentum.

Chetty and Lizelle Lee (6) perished in the space of 18 balls to leave South Africa Women on 163 for four in the 40th over but van Niekerk masterminded a 64-run, sixth wicket partnership with Kapp, to give the innings a strong finish.
