Three more teams reach Road to Mecca III quarter-finals

Pepsi Sonics, Plaisance Guardians and Retrieve Raiders became the latest teams to seal quarterfinal berths when the third annual GABF Road to Mecca National Club Championship continued Saturday.

Played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Plaisance Guardians downed Republic Bank Nets 72-62.

Nikoloi Smith top scored for the winning team with a game-high 29 points and nine rebounds. He was assisted by Mark Richards and Ron Campbell who netted 10 and seven points respectively and six rebounds each.

For the losing team, Darrian Lewis led the way with 17 points and four rebounds while Antwoine Austin and Mortimer Williams netted 16 and 11 points respectively.

Meanwhile, Linden unit Retrieve Raiders brushed aside New Amsterdam Warriors 63-44 in the second fixture of the evening.

Dwayne Roberts recorded 16 points and eight rebounds in the win while Jason Alonzo scored 11 points and nine rebounds and Marvin Hartman nine points.

For the losing team, Carlos Crandon scored 10 points while grabbing five rebounds while Ramone Fodgenay netted nine points and effected three steals.

Similarly, Pepsi Sonics downed the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans 73-64. Jason Squires had 18 points and eight rebounds while Trevor Smith supported with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Assisting with 13 points was Kerwin Jackson while Earl O’Neil netted 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

For the Trojans, Emmanuel Archibald scored a game-high 23 points while Ewart Smith registered a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Action in the event continues Friday at the same venue with a quarterfinal doubleheader.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth placed sides will receive $250,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade
