Rampaul sustains form for Surrey in draw

LONDON, CMC – Resurgent West Indies seamer Ravi Rampaul finished with a six-wicket match haul as Surrey drew with Somerset in the County Championship here yesterday.

The right-armer took a single wicket in Somerset’s second innings of 122 for four to add to his five wickets in the first innings, taking his tally in two games this season to 14.

Somerset were bowled out for 353 at the close on Tuesday and Surrey, starting their second innings yesterday, declared on 181 for eight.

Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara followed up his first innings 171 with a top score of 71.

Set 292 for victory, Somerset were rocked early when Rampaul removed opener Tom Abell in the second over without a run on the board.

Left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari then took three more wickets as Somerset stumbled to 62 for four but James Hildreth (40 not out) and Peter Trego (34 not out) put on 60 for the fifth wicket to prop up the innings and stave off a shock defeat.

The 31-year-old Rampaul, who played the last of his 18 Tests four years ago, has signed a two-year deal with Surrey.
