Meusa pips Khan on tiebreak to win ECI Chess tourney

Wendell Meusa and Taffin Khan played unbeaten in the Guyana Chess Federation/Engineering and Construction Inc. (ECI)-sponsored seven round Swiss System chess which ended recently at the National resources Centre.

Meusa, FIDE rated 1947 and Khan, whose FIDE rating is 1823 each ended on six and one half points but Meusa was declared the champion on the tiebreak system.

FIDE Candidate Master Anthony Drayton finished third with five points while Maria Thomas, former Guyana Chess Federation president Errol Tiwari, Davion Mars, Chino Chung, Ghansham Allijohn and John Wong finished on four points each.

Roberto Neto, 3.5 points, Kristoff Persaud, Obeng Quamina, and Nellisha Johnson, three points each, Calvin Giddings, 2.5 points, Jessica Callender and Jayden Taylor finished with two points each and Shazeeda Rahim with a solitary point were the other competitors.

According to a press release, “President of the GCF, Irshad Mohamed, congratulated the top performers and reserved special gratitude for ECI for once again showing an interest in the development of chess in Guyana.”

Mohammed, the release stated, also thanked the National Sports Commission for providing the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue, as the venue for the tournament.
