All roads lead to Victoria as Mayor’s Cup commences

All roads will lead to the Victoria Community ground today when the 22nd edition of the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship finally kicks off with what should be an epic doubleheader from 18:00hrs.

Today will witness the always physical but engaging Linden versus the East Coast of Demerara affair. In the opening fixture, Ann’s Grove United will oppose Eagles United while the feature contest will pit Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph against Milerock from 20:00hrs.

The action will then continue tomorrow at the same venue with another doubleheader from 18:00hrs.  In the opening matchup, Mahaica will oppose Soesdyke Falcons while Golden Grove will lock horns with Buxton Stars from 20:00hrs.

The 24-team event, which will be played on a knockout basis, will feature teams from five associations. The other teams competing are Guyana Police Force, Western Tigers, Riddim Squad, Santos and Camptown from under the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) umbrella.

On the other hand, Mahaica Determinators, Ann’s Grove, Victoria Kings, Golden Grove, Buxton Stars and Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph United will represent the interest of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) while Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) will be represented by Milerock, Eagles and Federal Winners Connection.

Meanwhile, Den Amstel, Pouderoyen, Uitvlugt, Beavers and Eagles will be the participants from the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) while the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) will field the likes of Grove Hi-Tech, Agricola Red Triangle, Soesdyke, Herstelling Raiders and Kuru-Kururu Warriors.

The venues that will be utilized for the event are the Victoria Community Ground, Den Amstel Community ground and Georgetown Football Club (GFC).

Winner of the event will receive $700,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
