Power lifting…GAPF selects 20 for NAPF c/ships in St Croix

The sum of 20 local strong men and women have fulfilled the criteria for selection to this year’s 14th IPF / NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championships scheduled for St. Croix, US Virgin Islands in August.

According to a press release from the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF), the athletes were selected based on their performances at the GAPF’s Senior National Championships in November 2015, the 2015 Pan-American Powerlifting Championships held in Brazil, and the 2015 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships held in Canada.

Team Guyana has earned multiple successes at this championship such as the ‘best team’ title twice, and numerous individual top three medals. The federation hopes to repeat its dominance at the event scheduled for August 14 to 19 despite its absence from last year’s meet.

The team is as follows: Demetri Chan (male Sub junior 74kg), Winston Stoby (Masters Two, 74kg), Neezam Deepan (male Junior 53kg), Johnny Seecharran (male Junior 66kg), Navendra Tamessar (male Open 59kg), Daniel Sooklall (male Junior 59kg), Dwayne Welch (open Male 59kg Classic/Raw), Rudolph Blackmon (male Open 83kg), Paul Adams (male Open 83kg), Gordon Spencer (Masters Two 83kg), Erwyn Smith (male Open 93kg), Nigel Phillips (male Open 93kg), Martin Webster (Masters one 93kg/Coach), Karel Mars (male Open 105kg), Fazim Abdool (male Open 105kg), Frank Tucker (male Masters Three 105kg), Jagdesh Budhram (Open 105kg), Farouk Abdool (male Open 120kg), Rawndell Clementson (male Open 120+kg) and Andrea Smith (female Open 57kg).

The release further stated that, the selected team comprises several seasoned athletes who have all been successful on the International and Regional Stages. The team also boasts several young talents eager to make their debut on the Regional Stage. The GAPF is appealing to Corporate Guyana and citizens to make this trip a reality for all the athletes.
