—Alpha United takes on Slingerz for title of nation’s number one football club

It what will be another chapter in their storied rivalry, Alpha United will oppose Slingerz FC in the grand finale of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer League Finale Championship today at the Leonora Sports Facility from 21:00hrs.

The matchup which will be a rematch of the League Genesis climax, will be the 10th meeting of the clubs. Examination of the rivalry indicate that Slingerz FC has four wins and three losses with two draws completing the series.

During the rivalry, Slingerz FC has scored 11 goals whilst conceding 14. However, a closer look at the numbers highlight that Slingerz are undefeated in the last six meetings, with a record of four wins and two draws.

In this period, the West Demerara unit has scored nine goals while only conceding four.

On current form Slingerz FC will be the favourite as they are yet to be defeated in the League Finale section, clinching their berth to the final following a 3-1 win over Pele FC. In terms of statistics, the Vergenoegen unit are the best offensive side  with 46 goals recorded from 15 matches at 3.06 goals per match compliments of a strike-force featuring Julian Wade, Trayon Bobb, Devon Millington, Vurlon Mills and Tichard Joseph.

Defensively, Slingerz FC are also number one as they have only conceded nine goals during that period compliments of a rearguard comprising of Quincy Adams, Les Charles Critchlow, Murilo Barbosa.

Alpha United are second best in the offensive category as they have scored 39 goals at an average of 2.6 goals per match compliments of Anthony Abrams, Delon Lanferman, Dwight Peters and Daniel Wilson.

With regards to the rearguard stats, the ‘Hammer’ are also in the second position with 11 goals conceded during the same period through a backline comprising of Joshua Browne, Solomon Austin and Colin Nelson. In the third place playoff at 19:00hrs, the Trevon Lythcott-led Fruta Conquerors FC, will lock horns with the Konata Manning-marshalled Pele FC. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage will pocket an additional $1,000,000.

The season champion will then be crowned when the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale respectively faceoff in a single matchup. That winner will then earn an automatic berth at the CFU level. If the winner of the League Genesis and League Finale rounds are the same team, they will earn the automatic CFU spot, with the second berth going to the team with the most accumulated points in both rounds non-inclusive of the eventual season champion.
