The national 15’s men rugby team’s recent success has enabled it to leap nine placing up the world rankings.
The jump from 55 to 46 came following its gritty 22-18 win versus Trinidad on Saturday in the southern zone final of the Rugby America’s North (RAN) championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.
According to a release from the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), the team’s current standing is an all-time high on the table which consists of more than 100 national rugby teams.
By virtue of their win, Guyana also moved up in the America’s ranking from 10th to eighth at the expense of Trinidad which slipped from eighth to 10th.
The national team which also defeated Barbados and Jamaica prior to Saturday’s match, will now face the winner of the Northern Zone (either Cayman Island or Mexico) for the overall spoils of the RAN Championship.
The Cayman Islands/ Mexico game is scheduled for July 3.
According to president of the GRFU, Peter Green, the winner of the RAN trophy, progresses to the next round to qualify for the 2019 World Cup in November. Kudos to the captain, Richard Staglon, his charges and the union’s brass for reaching new heights. (Emmerson Campbell)
