Arjoon, Khalil, win national singles squash crowns

Alex Arjoon and Ashley Khalil were crowned the Men and Women Open Senior Squash Champions respectively when the curtain came down on the Digicel Senior Championships yesterday at the Georgetown Club Facility.

Sealing his place in the final following an 11/8, 11/7, 12/10 semi-final win over Jason Ray-Khalil, Arjoon claimed the championship by  overcoming Kristian Jeffrey 6/11, 11/9, 11/6, 11/3 in the final.

Jeffrey had earlier clinched his place in the final after eliminating defending champion Nyron Joseph 7/11, 13/11, 11/7, 6/11, 13/11. In the third place playoff, Khalil squeaked past Joseph 11/5, 9/11, 11/7, 13/15, 11/3.

In the women’s final, Ashley Khalil clinched her maiden national title after crushing Akeila Wiltshire 11/4, 11/7, 11/8. Khalil clinched   a  place in the final by defeating Larissa Wiltshire in the first semi-finals 11/7, 11/5, 11/8 while Akeila Wiltshire downed Taylor Fernandes 11/9, 11/5, 9/11, 11/7 in the other semi.

The third place playoff of the section witnessed Fernandes edging Larissa Wiltshire 11/6, 6/11, 11/4, 2/11, 11/7.

In other results, Victoria Arjoon defeated Rebecca Low 11/4, 11/2, 11/3 to lay claim to the Women’s Classic Plate title while Regan Pollard clinched the Men’s Classic Plate Accolade following a walkover win over Ben Mekdeci.

Claiming the third position in the Women’s Plate Section was Makeda Harding who bested Maya Collins 11/5, 11/0, 13/11 while Raphael De Groot defeated Javed Alli 11/7, 11/9, 4/11, 11/6 to finish third in Men’s Classic Plate.

Also, Daniel Islam defeated Alec Melville 6/11, 10/12, 11/8, 11/3, 11/8 to win the Men’s Plate title while Alex Cheeks secured the third spot in the section with a 12/10, 11/2, 11/1 victory over Anthony Islam.

In the Men’s Veterans Division, Javed Alli defeated Medhi Ramdhani 11/3, 11/8, 8/11, 11/4 and Robin Low 11/6, 11/3, 11/7 while Garfield Wiltshire brushed aside Joe Mekdeci 11/9, 11/9, 11/8 and Douglas De Groot crushed Robin Low 11/6, 11/8, 11/2.

Overall, Garfield Wiltshire was crowned the Veteran 35-49 and Veteran Over-50 champion. Alli and Ramdhani finished second and third respectively in the Veteran 35-49 section while Mekdeci and Low secured the second and third positioned correspondingly in the Over-50 division.
