Barbados whip Jamaica as rain rules again

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Title-holders Barbados rebounded from their opening round loss to crush Jamaica by eight wickets but rain wrecked the Regional Women’s Championship for the second successive round here Saturday.

Playing at Enmore, the Barbadians bundled out Jamaica for 47 off 19 overs and then pulled off the run chase in 11.5 overs.

However, rain washed out play in the two other encounters, forcing no-results in the contests between Leeward Islands and Windward Islands at Everest, and Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago at Enterprise.

T&T top the standings with six points while Barbados, the Windwards, Guyana and the Leewards have four points and Jamaica, two.

In the only game possible, Jamaica were left to rue their decision to bat first as their innings folded meekly, without a single batsman reaching double figures. Medium pacer Deandra Dottin picked up four for 13 while fast bowler Shamilia Connell finished with three for 11 and fellow pacer Shakera Selman, two for 18.

In reply, Barbados were in early trouble when Kycia Knight was bowled by fast pacer Chinelle Henry without a run on the board off the second ball of the innings.

However, two partnerships then put Barbados over the line. First, captain Shaquana Quintyne put on 26 for the second wicket with opener Hayley Matthews who made 12 not out. When Quintyne perished in the seventh over for 17, Dottin arrived to smash an unbeaten 19 from 17 balls, in a 24-run, unbroken stand for the third wicket with Matthews.

The right-handed Dottin struck two fours and a six and was adjudged Player-of-the-Match. The tournament continues today with the third round.
