Guyana girls go down to BVI 18-54

Guyana started their Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Girls U16 Championships title hunt in the worst possible manner losing to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) 18-54 yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.

For the BVI, Shauliqua Fahie led the assault with a dominant performance of 24 points, 21 rebounds, seven assists and six steals while Jada Mohan was the main threat for the locals as she recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.

The contest was basically over at the halftime interval as BVI held a commanding 25-5 lead. It started with a first period rout as Guyana were held scoreless while conceding 11 points.

The hosts finally got off the mark in the second stanza but it did not change the momentum of the contest as BVI outhustled their foes 14-5 to lead by 20 points at the half time period.

The third period mirrored the second stanza as the visitors netted 14 points while restricting Guyana to five points to head into the final period ahead at 39-10. BVI sealed the lopsided contest as they outscored Guyana once again 15-8.

Meanwhile, The Bahamas edged Suriname in the second fixture 59-54. Valicia Demeritte recorded a monstrous double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds. She was supported by Tanea Bowleg who scored had 11 points.

On the Dutch side, Anita Tolud led the way with 17 points while Mirelva Marica supported with 16 points. Also, Barbados made a winning start to the tourney, edging Antigua and Barbuda 39-36.

Zahra Ashby and Roshanna Thorne led the winner with 12 and nine points respectively while Karel Knight and Timna Philip netted 12 points each for the loser. Action in the event resumes tomorrow at the same venue with another three matches.
