The Bahamas, with the U16 boys title already in the bag, completed the double in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U16 Championship, edging Suriname 55-50 in the girls final Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.
A fourth quarter assault secured the title for the Bahamians as they outshot the Dutch side 17-12 after the score was locked at 38-38 at the conclusion of the third period.
With the win, the Bahamian girls matched their male counterparts who had secured the boys U16 title only days earlier.
Tanea Bowleg top scored with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Valicia Demeritte chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds. For Suriname, Mirelva Marica netted 15 points while Chayenne Breinburg assisted with 12 points.
The first quarter witnessed the Bahamians taking the early initiative as they outscored the Surinamese 13-11.
However, the momentum in the contest changed in the second period as the Dutch nation seized the lead at 25-24 at the half after out-hustling their opponents 14-11.
The closely-fought encounter continued in the third period as Bahamas outscored Suriname 14-13 to equal the score at 38-38 and setup the fixture’s eventual end.
Meanwhile, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) downed Antigua and Barbuda 44-38 to clinch the bronze medal. Shauliqua Fahie recorded more than half of her team’s score with 25 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
For the losing team, Timna Philip produced figures of 14 points and 13 rebounds for her double-double while Britnay Gore had nine points and 16 rebounds.
