LONDON, CMC – Chesney Hughes closed in on the 700-run mark but Derbyshire were facing a battle to avoid defeat after collapsing on the second day of their County Championship game against Glamorgan here yesterday.
The Leeward Islands left-hander was among those failing in the first innings, scoring just eight, as Derbyshire were bundled out or 177 in reply to the hosts’ massive first innings of 518 at Colwyn Bay.
In their second turn at the crease, Derby ended the day on 78 for one with Hughes unbeaten on 12 and partnered by Hamish Rutherford on 32.
Derbyshire still require a further 263 runs to make Glamorgan bat again.
Despite the failure, Hughes moved to 684 runs for the season to be the second highest run-getter for his county. He has scored two hundreds and four half-centuries in what has been one of his best seasons to date.
Resuming the day on 481 for eight, Glamorgan added 37 runs before being dismissed and Derbyshire started strongly before suffering a bad slide.
Openers Rutherford (26) and captain Billy Godleman (24) put on 52 but once they were separated, ten wickets fell for 125 runs.
