Quintyne steers B/dos to easy win over Guyana

A match-winning knock from Barbados skipper Shaquana Quintyne steered her side to an easy 49-run win over hosts Guyana when round two of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Women’s Regional T20 tournament continued at Providence yesterday.

The West Indies player Quintyne, who was later adjudged MVP, played a true Captain’s knock with her unbeaten half-century, a 42-ball 62 with a pair of fours and sixes which was the foundation of her team’s 140-6.

Shamilia Connelly scored 19 and shared a 45-run stand with her skipper as Guyanese pacer Erva Giddings continued her form with the ball to bag 2-34.

In the end, the failure from the Guyana top-order resulted in their inability to complete a successful chase as they stumbled to 91-6 in 20 overs with Shemaine Campbelle stroking 43 not out in a brave effort.

Guyana first lost Latoya Smith, bowled by Deandra Dottin (2-20) who was the star with the ball for 13, before losing Melanie Henry a few overs later, ran out for just 10.

The Bajans continued to chip away at their opponents and the dismissal of Lashuana Toussaint, who was bowled by spinner Haley Matthews for five, only made things more complicated for the home team.

Tremayne Smartt (05) sought to team up with Campbelle After the top-order collapse but was cleaned up by Dottin.

After 15 overs Guyana were 49-4 but things went from bad to worse as they lost Hema Singh who was caught off the bowling of Tiffany Thorpe for a single run, leaving the score 53-5 in the 17th over.

With roughly 80 odd runs left to acquire from the last three overs, Campbelle launched a brief counterattack but the Barbados bowlers held their nerves to subdue both her and Akaze Thompson (10).

Batting first on a good track, the visiting ladies lost their top three batters for 49 run.

However, Quintyne, Connell and a vicious attack from Kycia Knight who thumped four fours and a six in her 29, helped the Bajans stage a brave fightback.

West Indies World Cup T20 star Matthews was the first to go, caught by Smartt off Giddings at mid-on to 03.

Giddings then sent both Dottin (6) and Knight packing as Reshelle Griffith (1), Carlene Taitt (04) and Aaliyah Alleyne (12) fell cheaply, leaving their captain stranded.

Guyana will battle Trinidad tomorrow from 2pm in the final round.
