Corley looking to chop down Gonsalves come August

Former world champion, DeMarcus ’Chop Chop’ Corley (46-27-1, 26 KO’s)’s career has seen him fight in more than 15 countries across the globe.

Next month, he brings his talents for the first time to the ‘Land of Many Waters’.

According to a Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) executive, Corley, who has fought world champions like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Zab Judah, Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana (all going the distance) will headline a mega boxing card on August 27 at the Giftland Mall.

The executive told this publication yesterday that Corley, 42, will match gloves against Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves for the WBC FECARBOX light welterweight title.

Corley brings experience and will be an interesting opponent for Gonsalves despite being 42 years old.

He has been an active boxer since his debut in 1996 and, from there, he has fought the best boxers in the world, becoming world champion from 2001 to 2003, so we are talking about a very experienced fighter.

At the height of Corley’s career in the early part of the 2000’s, he picked up the WBO super lightweight title and would later pick up a quality victory over the hard punching Randall Bailey. Following his win against Bailey he took on Zab Judah and lost a competitive split decision back in 2003.

However, he has won five of his last six fights on the road (three within the distance), that snapped a four-fight losing streak.

The wily Corley is far from being a finished boxer and will be a handful for the 25-year old Gonsalves (7-1-2) who has won his last three fights by KO.

It will be quite an entertaining match up for fight fans at the new Pattensen edifice on August 27.

Contracts are scheduled to be signed today (14:00hrs) at the head office of the GBBC on the Avenue of the Republic.
