The Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) Annual Summer Camp bowled off yesterday morning with a huge turnout as facilitators lauded the first-day attendance.
Roughly 50 youths were in attendance as coaches Garvin Nedd and former Guyana/West Indies Test batsman Travis Dowlin along with club President Alfred Mentore kicked off proceedings at the club’s pavilion which also saw parents in attendance.
Dowlin, who played 11 One Day Internationals (ODI) and six Tests for the West Indies, encouraged the youths to be disciplined and attentive during the two-week long clinic. They were also told to be interactive with each other as well as the coaches.
He credited the camp with churning out scores of top youth players who went on to play at the national level and believed that with more youths coming to the camp, it will only expand the reservoir of future national players as well as strengthen the talent basket of DCC.
With the club producing approximately 12-13 players a year who go on to play for Guyana or the West Indies at the respective U15/17/19 levels, Mentore encouraged the potential players to not only have fun but to adopt a professional attitude which will help take them far whether academically or in sports.
Coach Nedd then took to the field as he along with Dowlin and a few other members of the club began a series of simple exercises to get the blood flowing while the facilitators broke up the teens into several age groups as they commenced their journey as aspiring cricketers.
The camp continues today from 9:00hrs.
