Lower Corentyne to clash with Georgetown

GCB/Jaguars Franchise League

Table leaders Lower Corentyne will seek to maintain their scorching form when they lock horns with Georgetown in round two of the GCB/Jaguars Franchise League 3-Day competition which bowls off today.

A shift to the Albion Cricket Club means that the Veerasammy Permaul-led L/Corentyne side which destroyed Essequibo in their own backyard last weekend at Tuschen, will have a distinct edge on familiar turf for the second round encounter.

Players in the spotlight- Lower Corentyne

Jonathan Foo cracked a savage 152 from 90 odd balls against Essequibo in round one, and the larger Albion community ground could provide even more comfort for the in-form Berbician.

Permaul, the left-arm spinner opened the season with back-to-back 5-fers against the Cinderella County, finishing with another 10-wicket haul. His experience at Albion could spell trouble for Georgetown who experienced problems with Steven Jacobs’ off-spin during their first game against East Bank.

Fast-bowler Raun Johnson should have nabbed at least seven wickets, were it not for the numerous catches dropped off of his bowling. Playing in his comfort zone could assist the tall right-arm quick who will want to continue taking wickets.

David Latchaya and Gajanand Singh have been among the runs with fifties in the opening round and could well play crucial innings again for their side, especially in the middle-order.

Georgetown

While their first match was affected by rain at the Everest Ground, the Capital’s team will be looking to their skipper Leon Johnson, who recently returned from Test duty, to shine with the bat and inspire the side to a much needed win.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Dexter Solomon stroked an attractive half-century in the low-scoring encounter with East Bank, and could be one of the key batsman for his team again.

Strong performances over the next three days are expected from quality players such as all-rounder Chris Barnwell, Robin Bacchus, and other experienced players in the squad, to help Georgetown ease into top form ahead of the forthcoming rounds.

Georgetown will definitely look to flex their muscles and add to their current tally of 6.3 points, whilst the hosts will seek to make maximum use of home field advantage to further pad their league leading total of 19.4 points.

The match begins at 9:30hrs.
