Vintage reach final with upset of Old Fort Stallions

Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Vintage and GCC Spartans are through to the final of the men and women’s section following semi-finals Friday in the Lucozade Indoor Hockey Championship at the National Gymnasium.

Vintage upset Old Fort Stallions 3-1 in the semi-final round. Falling behind to a 12th minute strike from Askofu Simon, Vintage equalized through Devin Hooper six minutes later.

With the first half ending with the score unchanged, Hooper gave Vintage the lead as he converted via a penalty corner attempt. The result was sealed three minutes later when Dwayne Scott scored.

Vintage was down to play the undefeated Pepsi Hikers in yesterday’s final.

Meanwhile, GCC Spartans downed arch-rival Hikers 2-0 via the penalty shoot-out route after normal time ended 2-2.

In the shootout Marzana Fiedtkou and Shebiki Baptiste scored from the distance while Maria Munroe and Marisha Rodrigues failed to find the net.

Prior to the contest, Latacia Chung gave Hikers the lead as early as the first minute although Spartans levelled proceedings in the fifth minute through a Dominique DeGroot goal.

Upon resumption, Munroe restored the lead for Hikers with a 28th minute strike. However, the contest was pushed into the penalty shoot-out realm as Fiedtkou restored parity five minutes later.

Spartans was down to oppose the undefeated Pizza Hut GCC in the championship fixture yesterday. Up to press time, the finals in both section were underway at the same venue.
