Women beat Tanzania, men lose and draw

Guyana’s women team defeated Tanzania 4-0 in their third round match of the 42nd Chess Olympiad women’s team events in Baku, Azerbaijan yesterday.

The Guyanese, led by Women’s Candidate Master, Maria Varona Thomas, (FIDE  rating 1775) made light work of the Tanzanian players all of whom were unrated with Varona Thomas dispatching Vida Joseph Fammie, Jessica Clementson on board two defeating M Gwamwamba Fena, Yolander Persaud winning against Lalika Aida and Sheriffa Ali stopping Anawa Fredy  Martha.

They will play Aruba today.

Meanwhile, the men’s team lost by 1 ½ points to 2 ½ points to Guatemala before drawing with Fiji yesterday in the Open section.

Guatemala was paced by their two International Masters Carlos Juarez Flores and Wilson Eduardo Lorenzana but Guyana’s Candidate

Master Taffin Khan, playing on Board two with the white pieces, managed to secure a draw against Flores.

However, Candidate Master Drayton, on board one was defeated by Winston Darwin Cu Hor while Lorenzana defeated Ronuel Greenidege, Guyana’s third Candidate Master.

Haifeng Su, playing on board four and rated 1800, scored an upset win over Giron David rated 2174.

In their third round match against Fiji, Drayton (FIDE rating 1923) and Khan drew with Calvin Prasad (FIDE rating 2013) and Manoj Kumar (FIDE rating 1986) while Greenide lost to Taione Sikivou (FIDE rating 1812) and Sun won against Noel A. Adicula (FIDE rating 1656).

Guyana’s men’s team will be in action today against Ghana.
