Western Tigers to face Guyana Police Force in Mayor’s Cup final

Western Tigers and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will contest the final of the Mayor’s Cup football tournament following semi-final wins over Ann’s Grove and Federal Winners Connection Sunday at the Victoria ground.

Western Tigers downed Ann’s Grove 4-1 while the Guyana Police Force defeated Winners Connection 3-1.

Western Tigers’ Darren Benjamin gave the West Ruimveldt unit the lead in the 29th minute when his left foot free-kick from the right side evaded everyone and settled into the right corner.

Dwayne McLennon increased the lead five minutes later with a powerful strike into the top right hand corner from inside the right of the box, after a left side pass was deflected into his path.

Ann’s Grove eventually pulled one back in the 42nd minute through Phillips Williams who raced into the right side of the box before blasting a powerful right foot strike into the left side of the net.

The keen tussle resumed in the second half, with Ann’s Grove desperately searching for the equaliser.

However, it was Western Tigers who scored through Randolph Wagner in the 84th minute.

Wagner netted with a well-placed shot into the empty net, after latching onto a poor clearance outside the centre of the box.

Dellon Kelly then put the contest beyond the reach of Ann’s Grove in the 90th minute, slotting into the left side from the centre of the box, after an initial deflected shot fell into his path.

Meanwhile, GPF arrested Linden unit Winners Connection with Lerone Charles opening the scoring for the lawmen in the 14th minute, lobbing his effort over the onrushing goalkeeper after racing onto a lobbed pass behind the rearguard.

It then became 2-0 as Charles scored his second in the 48th minute with a shot from the top of the area into the right corner.

The lead was further increased in the 60th minute through a Trevor Jones header into the left corner, following a right side cross into the box.

It went from bad to worse for the Lindeners as Rawle Gittens was shown a red card in the 72nd minute for using abusive language towards the official.

Winners Connection eventually recorded a consolation goal in the 88th minute with Keon Sears scoring from the penalty mark. The two winners will now face-off on Sunday in the final at a venue to be announced.

The losing semi-finalists will lock horns in the third place playoff.

The winner of the event will receive $700,000 and the championship trophy compliments of Aruwai Resort while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.
