Junior national U17 player Alex Cheeks fashioned the first upset of the Farfan and Mendes Junior Squash Championship, defeating Category-A favourite, Caribbean Girls U19 runner-up Taylor Fernandes 3-2, on Wednesday’s opening night at the Georgetown Club.
In a match that could have gone either way, Taylor won the first game 11- 6, but Alex bounced back to win the second game 11 – 6. Taylor then won a close third game 11 – 9, but Alex again rebounded to take the fourth game 11 – 4. The fifth game was close throughout, but it seemed all over for Taylor when Alex had match ball at 10 – 7. Taylor refused to concede, and won the next three points to even the score at ten all.
