Quarter final berths for West Demerara teams

West Demerara giants Pouderoyen FC and Uitvlugt Warriors secured quarterfinal berths following hard-fought wins over Mahaica Determinators and Northern Rangers, respectively, when the Stag Nations Cup continued on Wednesday.

Pouderoyen FC came from behind to defeat Mahaica Determinators 2-1 at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora.  Eon Abel handed Mahaica the initial lead in the 35th minute, finishing across the body of the goalkeeper from inside the centre of the box, after a left side cross fell into his onrushing path.

However, a goal keeping blunder handed Pouderoyen the equalizer three minutes onward as, centrehalf Kiode King unleashed a speculative effort from just over the halfway line, which inexplicably squirmed between the legs of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Esan Nelson then sealed the win in the 42nd minute, compliments of a header across the body of the goalkeeper after, latching onto a cross from the left flank inside the penalty area.

Due to the win. Pouderoyen will now lock horns with Western Tigers in the quarterfinal stage. Meanwhile, Uitvlugt made it 2-0 for the West Demerara teams as, they overcame Georgetown outfit Northern Rangers 3-1 on penalty kicks, after normal time ended 1-1.

Stephon Reynolds handed Northern Rangers the lead in the 29th minute, while David Blake levelled proceedings moments before the conclusion of the first half. Following the win, Uitvlugt FC will tackle Santos in the final eight section.

The event resumes today at the Grove Community ground on the East Bank of Demerara, with the final round of 16 matchups.

At 18:00hrs, Ann’s Grove match skills with Den Amstel, while two time defending champion Grove Hi-Tech will lock horns with New Amsterdam United from 20:00hrs.
