No charges in Gecom stolen cameras probe – PAC hears

The police report on the investigation into 11 security cameras stolen from the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) 12 years ago, has advised that there was not enough evidence for anyone to be charged, Gecom’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield related to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Monday.

Lowenfield appeared before the PAC on Monday, where he was questioned on the status of the matter, as the last update provided indicated that the entity was awaiting a report from the Commissioner of Police.

Lowenfield related that it was advised that no charges be laid as there was insufficient evidence to implicate anyone. He informed the PAC that some of the employees named in the report were still in the employ of Gecom, as they were not directly involved in the matter.

Asked what provisions have been put in place to ensure that resources do not leave the compound without authorization, Lowenfield, who was not in charge at the time of the incident, told the PAC that security has since been upped.

He related that in addition to physical security, Gecom is now protected by full CCTV coverage, with sensitive storage areas and the ingress and egress of the compound being monitored 24/7.

Lowenfield stated that any records of stores collected by any staffers leaving the compound are checked twice to ensure that the slips for items received are entered into the store’s ledgers.
