Blankenburg man remanded for escaping from the cops

A Blankenburg resident was last Wednesday remanded to prison by a city magistrate after he was charged with escaping from the cops at the Police Headquarters in Eve Leary.

Jose Ahmad, 23, of Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara, yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of escaping from the police. It is alleged that Ahmad, on June 28, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, while being in lawful custody, pending an investigation into a simple larceny, escaped from police custody. The charge was read to Ahmad by Magistrate Annette Singh.

Police Prosecutor Denise Simmons sternly objected to bail for the accused. The prosecutor said that police at the Criminal Investigation Department are in the process of investigating several matters that are tied to the accused. She also pointed out that the accused has a matter at the Vreed- en- Hoop Magistrate’s court.

Magistrate Singh remanded Ahmad to prison. His matter was adjourned until January 13 for statements.
