Youths get bail after denying ATV theft

Three youths were yesterday released on $50,000 bail each after they denied a charge that they stole an ATV in the interior.

Chris Albert, 20, Affiea Angel, 20, and Alex Gilkes, 18, all of 7 Miles Mahdia, pleaded not guilty to the charge that between January 8 and January 9, 2017, they stole from Joseph De Santos a Honda All-Terrain Vehicle worth $3,600,000. Albert, Angel and Gilkes pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

Police prosecutor Neville Jeffers, who had no objections to the men receiving bail, told the court that on the night of January 8, De Santos parked his vehicle in front of his yard. On the following morning, he added, De Santos discovered it was missing.

Jeffers said that a report was made to the police, who later contacted the three accused. According to the prosecutor, the youths admitted, while under caution, to moving the vehicle.  Jeffers said that the ATV was later located in some bushes by the police.

Chief Magistrate McLennan set bail for the trio at $50,000 and adjourned the case until January 18, when it will be called again at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
