Gold theft accused trio granted bail

Three miners were granted $50,000 bail by the Chief Magistrate on Friday after they denied a charge of stealing raw gold from another miner.

The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on January 11, at Cuyuni River, Steve James, 25, of Soesdyke; Shemmy Bernard,19, and Junior Bascom, 23, both of St Cuthbert’s Mission, stole from Prince Bowman, 4½ pennyweight of raw gold. The three men pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objections to James, Bernard and Bascom being granted bail.

Chief Magistrate McLennan granted the men $50,000 bail each. Their matter was adjourned until February 3 when it will be called at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
