Werk-en-Rust man refused bail on theft charge

A Werk-en-Rust man was on Monday remanded to prison on a charge that he stole over $400,000 in articles from a woman.

The courtroom of Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on January 18, at Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, Kurt Lewis, 25, stole a hand bag, a cellphone, a gold band, a gold chain, a pair of gold earrings and a gold ring, all valued at $480,000, from Kelly Guo.

Lewis pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that only the gold ring was recovered on the defendant. Jones, who strongly objected to bail, said that the accused did not provide the police with an address and he lied about his occupation. The prosecutor told the court that the police file was complete.

Chief Magistrate McLennan remanded Lewis to prison and adjourned the matter until Friday.
