$400,000 bail for Lethem couple over 3kg of cannabis

A man and his reputed wife were on Tuesday granted bail after they were charged with being in possession of over six pounds of cannabis, which they claimed belonged to a family member.

Louis Cupertino, 29 and Felicia Madikin, 18, were read a charge of cannabis possession by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, which alleged that on January 27 at Moco-Moco, Village, Rupununi, they had in their possession 3kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Both defendants denied the allegation levelled against them.

According to the defendants’ attorney, the police went to their residence looking for Roland Cupertino, the brother of Louis, but he denied knowing where his brother was. Louis allegedly told police that his brother was last at their home on January 25, and left his things promising to return on January 27. Roland’s belongings were shown to the police who had returned in search of Roland, and upon examining Roland’s articles they discovered the drugs.

As it stands, the police are yet to arrest Roland but charged Louis and Madikin.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones stated that it was subsequent to the police receiving information that Louis had narcotics at his home, that a search was done, unearthing the drugs. When questioned about the drugs, the prosecutor said, Louis stated that the drugs had been left by his brother.

The Chief Magistrate granted the defendants $200,000 bail each, and adjourned the matter to March 2, when it will be heard at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
