Family of explosion victim in compensatory talks with ice plant owner

The family of Carlton Meghan, who died in an explosion at the ice plant where he was working, is currently in talks with the owner of the company for compensation.

Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday, 48-year-old Amrita Meghan, who tragically lost her husband more than two weeks ago, related that the family is currently in negotiations with the owner, Doodnauth Rasiawan, but they are not rushing the talks.

“We are all waiting. We can’t pressure the guy because he carried losses and we carried losses. He did make an offer of compensation, but the amount wasn’t disclosed yet. He is in trouble and I lose my husband but it’s not anyone’s fault,” she said. The family is not blaming anyone, she added.

The woman noted that Rasiawan paid all of the expenses for her husband’s funeral, which took place on Saturday, and has been helping the family. “He has been assisting tremendously and we are okay with accepting a compensation, but we haven’t been able to meet as yet to talk about it because everyone is taking it slow,” she added.

Meanwhile, a source from the Ministry of Social Protection’s Department of Labour confirmed that an investigation has begun. The department will be investigating whether all safety protocols were followed and whether the company’s complacency resulted in Meghan’s death.

On January 22, Meghan along another worker, was repairing the BM Enterprises Ice Plant at the Houston Wharf when an explosion pitched the two men off the 30-foot building. Meghan was killed instantly while the other worker sustained minor injuries.
