‘Whistle’ charged with attempted murder

Leon Duncan called ‘Whistle’ was once again taken before the George-town Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and charged with attempted murder and discharging a loaded firearm at a man.

Duncan, 27, of 1977, Williamstaad Road, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, stood in the prisoner’s dock before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, and was read two charges which stated that on January 8, 2017, at Georgetown, he discharged a loaded firearm at Ceon Nedd, with intent to maim,

disfigure, and to cause grievous bodily harm, while the second charge against Duncan read, that on September 26, 2016, at Oronoque and Forshaw streets, he discharged a loaded firearm at Geoffrey Farrell, with intent to murder him. Duncan was not required to plead to any of the charges.

Attorney at Law, Mark Waldron told the court that he had been representing the defendant for years on a murder case which had been dismissed by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in 2016. He said that since Duncan was freed of the alleged killing of businessman Imtiaz Roopnarine in 2013, the police of the ‘A’ Division believe that his client is responsible for every bad thing that happens.  Waldron said that his client was found not guilty, and was released and should be moving forward with his life but the police have now charged him with attempted murder and discharging a loading firearm.  The lawyer pushed for his client to be released on bail. Waldron also mentioned that Duncan lives with his grandfather, trade union leader, Carvil Duncan, at their Festival City home.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that the police’s file on the attempted murder charge was incomplete, while the file on the discharging of a loaded firearm charge was completed. Jones further told the court that Farrell, the virtual complainant, whom the accused allegedly attempted to murder, has since been released from the Georgetown Hospital.

Chief Magistrate McLennan, refused bail and remanded Duncan to prison. His matters were adjourned until February 27. The charge of discharging a loaded firearm at Nedd was transferred to court two, while the attempted murder charge remains in court one.
