Guyanese restaurant host stabbed to death in Trinidad

The police in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating the murder of a Guyanese man, who was yesterday morning discovered stabbed to death in his Henderson Street, Chaguanas apartment.

He has been identified as 29-year-old restaurant host, Meshach Yoel Mentore called “Joel”.

According to the Trinidad Express, a police report said that around 11.15 am yesterday, Mentore’s roommate found him in the living room of their apartment, unresponsive and bleeding from multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest.

The roommate said he last saw Mentore alive around 4 am when he was going to the bathroom, the report said while adding that police suspect that Mentore was killed during a dispute with his lover.

Mentore was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed for an autopsy tomorrow at the Forensic Sciences Centre, St James, the report stated.

Contacted yesterday afternoon, Mentore’s mother, Valerie Mentore of Lot 216 Stephen Street, ‘B’ Field Sophia, told Stabroek News that she learnt of her son’s death just after midday yesterday when she received a call from a friend. “He called and said Joel got stabbed and I asked him if he’s dead and he said well he’s not breathing,” she said.

She explained that Mentore death has been a shock to his family who are still unaware of what might have led to his demise. She added that a relative who resides in Barbados was expected to depart for Trinidad last evening to formally identify the body.

The woman explained that she last spoke with her son on Friday evening. “He does call very often and up to when I talk to him everything sounded ok at least,” she said.
