Gordon’s body was reported to have been pitched a distance from the point of impact. She was subsequently picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Stabroek News was told that Gordon was walking along the southern side of the Hubu Access Road when she was hit by a canter truck that was proceeding in the same direction. The driver of the truck reportedly swerved from an ongoing vehicle and hit the woman.

The driver, who is said to be a former member of the Guyana Police Force, was arrested and he remained in custody up to yesterday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination performed yesterday revealed that Gordon died as a result of multiple injuries sustained.

The dead woman’s son, Oslen Gordon, told Stabroek News that he was in Georgetown when he received a call from his aunt informing him of the accident. “My aunt call me and tell me that they taking her to the hospital and I must come there, but she had already known she was dead,” he said. The man added that when he arrived at the hospital, he saw a large crowd and then learnt of his mother’s demise.

He said based on what he was told, his mother left home, as is customary, to pick up his sister, who works as a medial assistant at a private clinic in the area, when tragedy struck.

The grieving man said while the driver is claiming that he swerved from another vehicle, resulting in the accident, eyewitnesses have challenged this account.

Gordon, who was described as a loving and hardworking mother, is survived by her three children.
