Bandit shot at GuyGas Complex identified as Coverden fisherman

The bandit who was fatally shot by a security guard early Tuesday morning, after he and two others attempted to rob the GuyGas Inc Complex at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD), has been identified.

According to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, the man was yesterday identified as Troy Simmons, 37, a fisherman of Sea Dam, Coverden Gardens, EBD.

The man’s body was identified by his reputed wife, Amanda Emmanuel, who told the police that she last saw him around 17:00 hrs on Monday, when two friends collected him stating they were going fishing.

Up to last evening, the police were checking their records to determine if Simmons had any brushes with the law.

Simmons was shot twice: to his head and chest after he and two others attempted to rob the GuyGas Complex. His accomplices managed to escape, and his body was discovered around 5.35 am on Tuesday in a clump of bushes behind the fence of the GuyGas property when the police returned to the scene. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.

Stabroek News had previously reported that the security guard was stationed in his observation post, which towers over the rear of the compound, when he saw the three bandits scale the fence.

The men reportedly proceeded to the observation post and attempted to access a ladder the guard uses. However, the security guard, who was armed with a shotgun, discharged several rounds in their direction.

As two of the bandits escaped, the other reportedly opened fire at the security guard, who discharged several more rounds in his direction.

A report was then made to the police, who responded but were unable to locate any of the bandits. They returned at daylight to obtain statements and conduct further investigations when Simmons’ body was found.

The security guard was questioned and is assisting the police with their investigation.
