Plaisance woman gets bail on currency fraud charge

A Plaisance woman, who was accused of attempting to pass off forged United States dollars, was on Wednesday granted her release on bail by a city magistrate after denying the charge.

Samantha De Souza, 33, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, was read the charge by Magistrate Fabayo Azore. It stated that between March 1st, and March 25th, 2017, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she had uttered to Abi Manu US$1,300, the equivalent of GY$273,000, knowing same to be forged.

De Souza pleaded not guilty to the charge. There was no objection by the prosecution to bail being granted.

The court also heard that the file in relation to the matter was incomplete.

De Souza was subsequently granted her release on $75,000 bail, and her next hearing was fixed for April 19th.
