A prison officer was yesterday granted his release on $150,000 bail after he denied smuggling ganja into the Camp Street jail.

Stephon Sobers, 23, of Block ‘AA’ Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, was read a charge which stated that on March 28, at the Georgetown Prison, he smuggled in 113 grammes of cannabis.

Sobers pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.

Police Prosecutor Arwin Moore did not go into details of the charge and did not object to the officer being granted bail. Moore did, however, tell the court that the amount should be substantial. He added that Sobers should lodge his travel documents with the court and report to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Alberttown Police Station on stipulated days identified by the court.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently granted Sobers bail and adjourned the case until April 24 for a report and statements.
